Veterans Support During the Holidays: A Time for Giving Back

The holidays are a season of joy, togetherness, and gratitude, but it can also be a time of hardship and uncertainty for many veterans. As we gather with loved ones and celebrate the season, it’s important to remember those who have served our country and now need our support.

The past few years have been exceptionally challenging for low-income veterans, with rising living costs and insufficient income growth. Over the last year, we have seen a 18% increase in veterans and their families, particularly those facing eviction, reaching out for assistance. With rents surging since 2021 by 33% and average incomes only rising by 18%, this disparity has placed immense pressure on veteran households.

Let’s unite to bring these deserving individuals hope, warmth, and relief. Remember, your support makes an impact that lasts beyond the holiday season.

Why the Holidays Are Hard for Veterans

The holiday season often magnifies the struggles veterans face. For some, the financial burden of gift-giving, holiday meals, and seasonal travel can be overwhelming. For others, this time of year brings feelings of isolation, grief, or memories of comrades they’ve lost.

  • Financial Pressures: Rising living costs have hit low-income veterans hard. Many choose between rent, utilities, and food, leaving little room for holiday expenses.
  • Homelessness and Housing Instability: Veterans experiencing or on the brink of homelessness are often left out of holiday celebrations entirely, lacking even the basic comforts of a warm meal or secure shelter.
  • Mental Health Challenges: The holidays can exacerbate PTSD, depression, and anxiety for veterans, particularly those without a strong support system.

The good news? Your support can make a tangible difference.

How NVHS Supports Veterans During the Holidays and All-Year-Long

Your generosity fuels meaningful change in the lives of veterans and their families. Through compassionate support from individuals like you, NVHS has provided critical assistance and brought hope to those who need it most.

Here’s how your contributions help:

  • Search and Rescue Program: By addressing urgent needs and connecting veterans and their families to housing and essential benefits, this program helps prevent homelessness and ensures stability for those facing difficult times.veteran receiving food donation
  • Transitional Housing Program: This program provides temporary shelter and resources to veterans and their families, empowering them to rebuild their lives and move toward independence.
  • Holiday Support: Through events like gift distributions, holiday meals, and temporary accommodations, NVHS spreads joy and comfort during the holiday season, reminding veterans they are not alone.
  • Community Programs & Events: Through engaging community programs and events, NVHS brings people together to make a tangible impact. From 5K races that raise vital funds for veterans’ services to highway cleanups that promote community pride, every event offers a chance to give back meaningfully.

Through these programs, NVHS supported over 500 veterans and their family members in the last year, providing critical resources, stability, and care. From preventing homelessness and offering transitional housing to spreading joy during the holidays and delivering nourishing meals, these efforts create lasting change.

Since 2008, we have reduced veteran homelessness from 1,800 to less than 200—a remarkable 90% decrease overall.

By addressing immediate needs and long-term challenges, NVHS ensures that veterans and their families have the support they need. The impact is clear, and your support is vital!
