VA Programs: Mental Health Resources

VA Programs: Mental Health Resources Veterans who have endured the trauma of war and/or the stresses of reintegrating into the civilian world may be at a greater risk for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. As such, mental health issues are major hot topics in the veteran community.  Still, when you or a loved one is suffering from mental health issues, it can be difficult to know how and where to reach out for help.  For those who qualify, the Department of Veterans Affairs is a great place to [...]

VA Programs: Supportive Services for Veteran Families

VA Programs: Supportive Services for Veteran Families In talking about the myriad issues faced by veterans, it's important to remember that most veterans are part of an interconnected network of family, friends, jobs, and community. When veterans suffer, all the people around them are affected, too.  For that reason, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) funds Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSFV), a program designed to help veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. SSVF services are provided by local nonprofits around the country, [...]

Veteran Experiences: Gulf War Veterans

The First Gulf War, also commonly referred to as Operation Desert Storm, was a short international conflict that took place in Iraq after the country invaded Kuwait in August of 1990 under the leadership of then-president Saddam Hussein. A large international alliance, including many Arab countries and NATO allies, condemned the invasion and demanded that Iraq cease its aggression against Kuwait. When Hussein failed to withdraw his troops, the United States and its allies launched Operation Desert Storm, a massive airstrike campaign, in January of 1991. By the end [...]

How To Give Back to Your Community

How To Give Back to Your Community Community connection is an essential part of our overall health and well-being. And yet, it's in danger. Experts agree that loneliness and isolation are some of the biggest challenges facing Americans today—not to mention among the most dangerous to our physical and mental health.  There are a lot of reasons for our growing disconnection: the rise of digital culture, for one. The mandatory social isolation policies of the COVID-19 pandemic certainly didn't help either. Whatever the reason for our growing collective loneliness, it's [...]

VA Programs: Employment Resource

VA Programs: Employment Resource When it comes to addressing and preventing homelessness among veterans, employment is one of the most impactful and effective factors. Veterans with a steady job are more likely to be financially stable, safely housed, and have access to amenities such as health insurance.  However, for a variety of reasons, many veterans find it difficult to find adequate or appropriate employment after leaving the military. To that end, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers robust employment assistance for veterans. Here, we'll give a brief overview of [...]
