Three Veterans benefit from Valentines Day charity

Valentine’s Day is a time for love, appreciation, and generosity, but beyond chocolates and roses, it’s also an opportunity to extend kindness to those in need. While many celebrate with their loved ones, thousands of veterans across the country face homelessness, struggling to find food, shelter, and hope. This year, you can make a meaningful impact by participating in a Valentine’s Day charity initiative that helps veterans get back on their feet. Whether you donate to support veterans, provide essential supplies, or contribute to outreach efforts, your generosity can change a life.

At National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS), we believe that love isn’t just about what we receive—it’s about what we give.

Let’s spread love beyond our inner circles this Valentine’s Day and extend it to those who have served our country and now need our help.

Why Are Veterans Experiencing Homelessness?

Homelessness among veterans is a heartbreaking reality caused by multiple challenges that make it difficult to transition back into civilian life. Many struggle with:

  • Financial Hardship: After military service, some veterans face job insecurity, rising living costs, and financial struggles that can lead to homelessness.
  • Mental Health Challenges:  Many veterans battle PTSD, depression, and anxiety, which can impact their ability to maintain employment and stable housing.
  • Physical Disabilities: Service-related injuries can limit employment opportunities and increase medical expenses, making housing even harder to afford.

For many, a single act of kindness can be the turning point toward a new beginning. Through Valentine’s Day charity efforts, we can provide them with food, shelter, and essential resources that bring hope and stability.

How Valentine’s Day Giving Can Offer a New Beginning

Homeless veterans often feel forgotten and overlooked, but a small act of kindness, a donation, a care package, or volunteering your time can remind them that they are valued, respected, and not alone.

This year, instead of (or in addition to) traditional Valentine’s Day gifts, choose to give back in a way that creates real change. Here are several impactful ways to participate in Valentine’s Day charity that supports homeless veterans:

Donate

One of the most effective ways to help is by making a financial contribution. Your donation provides:

  • Emergency assistance for veterans in crisis.
  • Housing support to help keep veterans off the streets.
  • Mental health resources for veterans struggling with PTSD and trauma.

Right now, there are veterans wondering where they’ll sleep tonight or where their next meal will come from. These heroes once served our country, and now, they need us to serve them.

Donate now and give them the gift of hope.

Provide Essential Items for Veterans in Need

For many homeless veterans, basic necessities are a daily struggle. A warm meal, clean clothes, or a flashlight can make a difference. This Valentine’s Day, show love through action by donating food, snacks, or essential supplies to help veterans in our community feel supported and cared for.

Right now, we need these items for our outreach efforts:

Food:

  • Pop-top can pastas, meats, fruits, soups (no cream of soup, vegetables, beans, or tomato)

Snacks:

  • Granola bars, single-serve crackers, beef jerky
  • Instant coffee & drink mix powder (single-serve packets)

Essential Supplies:

  • Bug repellent to protect against the elements
  • Bike locks (word combo) & bike light sets for safety
  • Batteries (AA, AAA) for flashlights and radios

Even one small donation can bring comfort, security, and hope to a veteran in need. Drop off your donations at NVHS, or contact us for details on how you can help. Together, we can ensure that no veteran is left behind.

Bill Breyer: 15 Years of Dedication to Veterans in Need

Bill Breyer, a U.S. Army veteran (1964-1966), has been a dedicated NVHS Search & Rescue Outreach Team member since 2009. His journey began when he saw a Florida Today cover featuring a man in a black cowboy hat speaking to a wounded, homeless Iraqi war veteran. Intrigued, he contacted the paper and soon connected with George Taylor Sr., NVHS’s founder—and the rest is history.

Bill has worked tirelessly for the past 15 years to help homeless veterans access resources, necessities, and permanent housing. Every week, he volunteers at the Holy Name of Jesus, St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry, providing direct support to those in need.

Bill believes that volunteering requires 100% dedication, especially in Search & Rescue, where hearing veterans’ stories can be emotionally demanding. His passion and commitment have changed countless lives, and we are incredibly grateful for his unwavering service in the fight to end veteran homelessness.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s about connection, compassion, and being part of something bigger. Bring your team, your family, or just your heart, and help make a real difference this Valentine’s and beyond.
