VA Mental Health Services
Mental health challenges can affect any veteran, whether they left the military recently or years ago. Feelings of stress, anxiety, isolation, difficulty adjusting to civilian life, or struggles connected to past experiences can make it harder to maintain stability, relationships, employment, and housing.
Many veterans know support exists, but are not sure where to start. Questions about eligibility, available services, and where to find help often create additional barriers. National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS) helps homeless and at-risk veterans connect with resources, support services, and information related to mental health and recovery.
If you are looking for mental health resources, support options, or information about available services, the NVHS chatbot can guide you to relevant programs and services. It can also help you understand which options may involve the VA.
How We Bridge the Gap to Recovery
Mental health concerns often overlap with other challenges, including housing instability, financial hardship, lack of basic necessities, or difficulty accessing support services. Addressing those barriers can help veterans focus on their overall well-being and mental health recovery.
NVHS supports homeless and at-risk veterans and their families through outreach, prevention-focused services, connections to housing assistance, transitional housing support for eligible participants, emergency supplies, and referrals to community resources related to mental health and stability.
NVHS may help veterans connect with:
- Housing and shelter resources
- Basic needs support, including food and hygiene supplies
- Community support services
- Benefits and resource information
- Educational materials related to PTSD and PTSA
- Peer support resources and therapy-related resource referrals
- Programs that help address barriers to stability
Through its PTSA program, NVHS promotes awareness, education, action, anonymity, and stigma reduction. The program helps veterans learn about available resources and support networks while encouraging conversations about mental health and recovery.
NVHS does not provide clinical mental health treatment. Licensed healthcare professionals, the VA, Vet Centers, and other qualified providers deliver clinical care, and NVHS helps connect veterans to those resources.

Targeted Mental Health Programs
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers a variety of mental health programs designed to support veterans with different needs and experiences. Available services vary based on eligibility, location, and individual circumstances.
Veterans may be able to access support for:
Post-Traumatic Stress and Trauma-Related Concerns
The VA offers treatment options and support services for veterans experiencing symptoms related to traumatic events and military service experiences.
Military Sexual Trauma Support
The VA provides services and counseling options related to military sexual trauma. Some services may be available even if a veteran is not enrolled in VA healthcare.
Substance Use Support
Veterans may have access to treatment programs and recovery support for substance use concerns through VA and community-based providers.
Crisis Support Resources
Veterans experiencing a mental health crisis can access immediate support through the Veterans Crisis Line by calling 988 and pressing 1, texting 838255, or chatting online through VA crisis resources.
Comprehensive Clinical Treatment Options
Depending on eligibility and individual needs, veterans may have access to a range of mental health treatment options through the VA and other qualified providers.
These options may include:
Primary Care Mental Health Support
Some mental health concerns can be addressed through primary care settings where behavioral health support may be available.
Outpatient Counseling and Therapy
Veterans may qualify for individual counseling, group therapy, and other outpatient mental health services.
Inpatient and Residential Programs
Some veterans may benefit from more intensive levels of care, including inpatient treatment or residential programs, depending on their circumstances and clinical needs.
Integrated Support Services
Mental health treatment may be combined with services that address substance use, physical health concerns, and other factors that affect overall well-being.
Not every veteran qualifies for every program or service. Available treatment options depend on eligibility requirements, provider recommendations, and individual circumstances.

Navigating the Enrollment Process
Understanding available mental health resources can feel overwhelming, especially when eligibility rules and enrollment requirements are unfamiliar.
Many VA mental health services are available through VA healthcare enrollment, while some services, including certain Vet Center programs, may be available without enrolling in VA healthcare.
Veterans interested in VA healthcare can generally apply:
- Online through the VA website
- By phone
- By mailing a completed application
- In person at a VA facility
The VA reviews factors such as military service history, discharge status, income, and other eligibility requirements when determining enrollment.
Veterans who are unsure where to begin can use the NVHS chatbot to learn more about available mental health resource locations and identify potential next steps. NVHS can also help connect veterans with community services and support programs that may help address barriers affecting stability and access to care.
A Sustainable Path to Stability
Mental health support can play an important role in helping veterans build stability and improve their quality of life. Whether someone is looking for counseling, peer support, or information about available mental health programs, taking the first step can make a meaningful difference.
NVHS remains committed to supporting homeless and at-risk veterans through outreach, prevention-focused services, connections to housing assistance, transitional housing support for eligible participants, PTSA awareness efforts, community education, and resource referrals.
If you are searching for mental health resources or support services, use the NVHS chatbot to explore available options and learn about programs that may fit your situation. Help is available, and you do not have to navigate the process alone.
