VA Housing Support: What You Need to Know

Safe, stable housing should never be out of reach for those who have served our country. Whether you’re facing eviction, living without shelter, or working toward homeownership, there are VA programs built to help. This guide breaks it all down, allowing you to clearly understand your options and receive the support you need, with assistance from National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS).

  • HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development – VA Supportive Housing):

Combines HUD housing vouchers with VA case management. It is designed for veterans who are homeless and need ongoing mental health or clinical care.

  • SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families):

Helps very low-income veterans and their families stay housed or transition out of homelessness with case management, rental assistance, and financial aid.

Allows veterans to buy, build, or refinance a home with no down payment, more flexible credit terms, and better interest rates than most conventional loans. Learn how to apply for one here.

  • SAH/SHA Grants (Specially Adapted Housing / Special Housing Adaptation):

Offers grants for veterans with service-connected disabilities to make their homes accessible, safe, and livable.

You may qualify for one or more programs if:

  • You served on active duty and received a discharge other than dishonorable.
  • You’re currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
  • Your household income falls below a certain local threshold.
  • You have a service-connected disability (for housing grants)
  • You meet minimum credit/income standards (for VA loans)
