Tax Resources for Veterans

Tax season can be a stressful time for many veterans. There are a variety of resources available to help veterans file and alleviate the financial toll of taxes, but they can be difficult to find and navigate. NVHS helps connect veterans with these resources to make it easier for them to utilize these benefits they are entitled to.

Free Assistance Filing

Veterans have access to free tax filing, and assistance from tax experts.

MilTax

MilTax is a free taxing filing and prep service offered to members of the military. This includes access to tax experts to help with tax prep. While MilTax is intended for active service members and their families, it remains available for veterans up to 365 days after they leave the service.

This is a great resource for veterans who recently left the service, and are still navigating the complexities of filing as a service member, while adjusting to civilian life.

IRS Free File

The IRS offers free access to partnered tax filing software for individuals that earn less than $84,000 a year. While not specifically for veterans, this program is great for low-income individuals, as they can use online guided tax-prep software for free.

There are also free fillable forms offered by the IRS for all income levels, but they do not include the level of assistance filling out the forms that guided tax-prep software does.

VITA

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a program offered by the IRS for individuals who make $67,000 or less a year, or have disabilities. This program offers free tax counseling from IRS-certified volunteers, and help preparing tax filings.

Again while not specifically targeting veterans, this is a great resource for low-income and disabled veterans.

Tax Benefits for Veterans

Property Tax Exemptions for Disabled Veterans

In Florida, veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or higher are entitled to a $5,000 deduction on the value of their home for the purposes of calculating property tax. Veterans with a service-connected permanent total disability and spouses of Armed Forces members who died from service-connected causes are exempt from property tax all together, as long as they are permanent residents of Florida.
