Tax Benefits and Receipts
Donation receipts are provided at the time of donation. Here’s how different types of in-kind donations are handled for tax purposes:
- Goods, Campers, and Vehicles: We provide a receipt acknowledging the donation and its condition. Donors are responsible for determining the fair market value (FMV) of the donated items based on IRS guidelines.
- Real Estate: For real estate donations, a qualified appraisal is required to determine the FMV if the claimed deduction is more than $5,000. The process typically involves obtaining a clear title and an inspection to determine the value for tax purposes. Donors should refer to IRS guidelines for detailed requirements.
- Professional Services: While the value of donated services is not tax-deductible, we provide a receipt acknowledging the contribution of time and expertise.
For more detailed information, you can refer to IRS Publication 561 and IRS Publication 526.
Our Impact
Your in-kind donations have made a significant impact. In 2023, NVHS made significant strides in assisting veterans and their families, with a 36% increase in total clients assisted compared to 2022. We supported 353 veterans and 191 of their family members through our Search and Rescue Program and Transitional Housing Program. Additionally, our efforts helped reduce the homeless veteran population in Brevard County by 90%, from 1,800 in 2008 to less than 200 in 2024. Donated vehicles have provided reliable transportation for veterans to attend job interviews and medical appointments, while household goods have helped furnish new homes for those transitioning from homelessness. Pro bono professional services have provided critical support in areas such as legal advice and medical care. We also educate the public on Post Traumatic Stress and provide creative therapy events for our veterans, including arts and crafts, outdoor activities, and holiday-based activities to help reduce stress and foster a sense of belonging.
