Veteran Experiences: Gulf War Veterans
Veteran Experiences: Gulf War Veterans The First Gulf War, also commonly referred to as Operation Desert Storm, was a short international conflict that took place in Iraq after the country invaded Kuwait in August of 1990 under the leadership of then-president Saddam Hussein. A large international alliance, including many Arab countries and NATO allies, condemned the invasion and demanded that Iraq cease its aggression against Kuwait. When Hussein failed to withdraw his troops, the United States and its allies launched Operation Desert Storm, a massive airstrike campaign, in January of [...]

How To Give Back to Your Community
How To Give Back to Your Community Community connection is an essential part of our overall health and well-being. And yet, it's in danger. Experts agree that loneliness and isolation are some of the biggest challenges facing Americans today—not to mention among the most dangerous to our physical and mental health. There are a lot of reasons for our growing disconnection: the rise of digital culture, for one. The mandatory social isolation policies of the COVID-19 pandemic certainly didn't help either. Whatever the reason for our growing collective loneliness, it's [...]
VA Programs: Employment Resource
VA Programs: Employment Resource When it comes to addressing and preventing homelessness among veterans, employment is one of the most impactful and effective factors. Veterans with a steady job are more likely to be financially stable, safely housed, and have access to amenities such as health insurance. However, for a variety of reasons, many veterans find it difficult to find adequate or appropriate employment after leaving the military. To that end, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers robust employment assistance for veterans. Here, we'll give a brief overview of [...]

VA Programs: Health Resources
VA Programs: Health Resources Injuries and medical issues (whether service-related or not) can have a huge impact on the lives of veterans, as can the process of finding and paying for healthcare services. Fortunately, for veterans who qualify, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers extensive resources and support. However, navigating the eligibility requirements, determining what services are covered, and figuring out how to apply can often be a confusing process. Here, we've compiled a one-stop, brief overview of veterans' health care through the VA: What Healthcare Services Do VA [...]
Veteran Experiences: Vietnam Veterans
Veteran Experiences: Vietnam Veterans In many ways, the Vietnam War was a formative part of United States history. For example, it was the first widely televised war, meaning that the American public had unprecedented access to the conflict. Further, despite the many years and lives lost to the war, its outcome remains hotly debated to this day—while many American consider the war a failure, there never was (and likely never will be) any kind of clear consensus on who won the war. And, finally, the Vietnam War occurred during [...]
Resources for Veterans
Resources for Veterans Whether you're a veteran in need or a Good Samaritan looking for ways to provide help for homeless veterans, these resources are a great starting point for some of veterans' most common needs: Department of Veterans Affairs. As an institution, the VA is contentious, not least for its recent history of scandals and its reputation for being weighed down by bureaucracy. In spite of all that, however, it's important to remember that the VA does provide help and resources to veterans who qualify, and is still widely [...]
The Dangers of Homelessness for Veterans
The Dangers of Homelessness for Veterans Previously, we've written about many of the factors that are known to cause and/or perpetuate homelessness among veterans. In this article, we'll shift our perspective slightly to talk about the disadvantages and dangers that homeless veterans face, as well as the effect it has on their health (both physical and mental) and overall well-being. Violence. There's a prevalent stereotype that homeless people are dangerous, unpredictable, or violent. In fact, homeless individuals are more likely to be victims of violent attacks than perpetrators. According to [...]
