VA Programs: Housing

VA Programs: Housing Poverty and affordable housing are among the biggest and most widespread risk factors for homelessness. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), the shortage of available and affordable rental homes in the United States has reached 7.3 million. In Florida, data shows that there are only 23 available and affordable rental homes for every 100 low income renter households.  This can spell trouble for veterans, particularly those who are unemployed due to a service-related disability or mental health condition, or those who are having trouble [...]

For qualifying veterans in this situation, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) covers some long-term care services, including assisted living centers or in-home care. Here, we've outlined some of the resources and programs available to veterans who need [...]

Symptoms of PTSD

Symptoms of PTSD The last several decades have seen immense growth in visibility and research around Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced trauma, and it remains particularly common among service members who have seen active duty combat.  Still, in spite of the growing public awareness of PTSD, recognizing the disorder isn't always as easy or straightforward as we might like to believe. Like depression and other mental health disorders, the symptoms of PTSD are highly variable and often overlap with other psychiatric disorders. In some [...]

Myths and Misconceptions About Homelessness

Myths and Misconceptions About Homelessness In January 2020, the total number of homeless people in the United States was estimated to be 580,466—more than half a million. Still, in spite of how widespread and pervasive the issue of homelessness is, myths about homeless individuals continue to abound. These misconceptions about homelessness aren't just untrue—they're often actively harmful to homeless individuals, including homeless veterans, and efforts to help them.  Myth: Homeless Individuals Are Violent or Dangerous This idea has been soundly disproven by research. In fact, homeless individuals are more likely [...]

VA Programs: Financial Resources

VA Programs: Financial Resources Financial stability is an important component of a successful, happy life. Unfortunately, many of the factors that commonly affect veterans—including substance abuse, lack of financial literacy, lack of affordable housing, lack of affordable healthcare, and under- or unemployment—are also linked to financial instability and poverty. If not addressed, financial issues can eventually result in homelessness.  Fortunately, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a variety of resources designed to help qualifying veterans improve their financial literacy and achieve (or maintain) financial stability. VA Programs: Mental Health Resources

VA Programs: Supportive Services for Veteran Families

VA Programs: Supportive Services for Veteran Families In talking about the myriad issues faced by veterans, it's important to remember that most veterans are part of an interconnected network of family, friends, jobs, and community. When veterans suffer, all the people around them are affected, too.  For that reason, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) funds Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSFV), a program designed to help veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. SSVF services are provided by local nonprofits around the country, [...]
